He has been back on the celebrity scene over the past few years, mainly through reality show appearances, but this star is in the headlines again this week for all of the wrong reasons.

Singer Dane Bowers was yesterday convicted of assaulting his ex-girlfriend, Sophia Cahill, by Croydon Magistrates Court.

According to reports, Cahill claimed that Bowers grabbed her, threw her out of a bedroom and hit her in the face, leaving her with a bloody nose after an argument. She alleged that he also pulled her by the hair and squeezed her throat. The incident is said to have taken place in front of Cahill’s two young children.

Speaking in court yesterday, Bowers claimed that the incident occurred when he returned home from a night out with glitter on his nose. While he and Cahill had previously split up, they had agreed not to see other people, and Cahill became suspicious and “jumped to conclusions”. The alleged attack began after Cahill quizzed Bowers about the makeup on his face.

Bowers, who is himself a father-of-one, denied the charge against him and pleaded self-defence, however he was convicted of assault by beating.

After handing down the decision, District Judge Andrew Sweet said: “It was a sustained assault, causing her injuries, that took place in the presence of her two children. The charge is proved. Bearing in mind the nature of this assault…I’m not ruling out the possibility of a prison sentence.”
