Stunned motorists rescued a baby found crawling across four lanes of traffic after his mother fell asleep.

The driver who rescued the one-year-old boy in Utah in the US on Friday night, returned him to his mother and called the police.

“As the driver got closer she realised it was a baby crawling across the road in the number one lane,” police officer Lt. Dennis Vincent said. “She picked the baby up and located a residence where she thought the baby belonged.”

A trucker reportedly blocked traffic to protect the crawling baby.

The unidentified mum told police she was resting and had put the baby in a crib to sleep.

Police said her 7-year-old daughter took the baby out to play and he somehow got out of the backyard and crawled towards the busy street.

One driver told a local radio station that the little boy had “someone looking down on him” that day.

Police say charges are unlikely, but the case has been turned over to the Division of Child and Family Services.
