Reddit users were asked about the worst baby names they’ve heard so far this year – and they didn’t hold back!
Aliviyah, Sweetmeat and Harley Quinn were some of the names causing more than a little eye-rolling among those questioned.
And it seems the biggest bone of contention was getting creative with the spelling of names.
“I f*****g hate, hate, hate when parents do the whole “creative spelling” thing,” said one commenter with more than a touch of exasperation. “In almost all interactions, it doesn't matter how it's spelled, because you're just saying the name. But then when it does matter, it's a hassle to all involved, with no benefit whatsoever. There's just that one-time benefit where the asshole parents think they're clever when they think it up, and it's all downhill from there.”
“Mhavryck. Pronounced as Maverick [was the worst],” continued the exchange.
“Huh. And I thought Gryffynne for “Griffin” was bad,” replied another user.
“What is it with a ‘y’ instead of a vowel?” one commenter added bemusedly.
“Pretentiousness,” came the simple reply.
“It's because that child is SPECIAL and needs to stand out,” added another.
“You mean, “Speychyl”?
“Speshul Sneauxflaikye.”
And it wasn’t just those ‘y’ lovers who given a hard time. Parents who favour an ‘ee’ instead of ‘y’ also came under fire.
“Like Amee or Billee or Melanee,” said one commenter.
“Worst I heard was where they’d spelt it Bethanie instead of Bethany because ‘then she can dot her I with a little heart’,” came the reply.
