Hyperopia in children is quite common but it often goes unnoticed. There are some main signs you can watch out for if you think your child may be farsighted. Children who suffer from hyperopia very often don’t see objects that are close up as blurry. This is because children who are born with hyperopia have never seen close objects clearly and may not be aware that it is possible to see them clearly.

Also, children with hyperopia can often counteract farsightedness by unconsciously straining their eyes. By straining their eyes they are able to see images clearly. Therefore the main symptom of hyperopia is often headaches, not blurring. If your child seems to be suffering from headaches then your G.P. will probably recommend a visit to the optometrist.

Another common symptom to watch out for is crossed eyes. This occurs when a child is straining their eyes to see close up images more clearly. If you notice your child crossing their eyes it is important to speak to your G.P. as soon as possible as early detection can prevent more serious problems such as strabismus or amblyopia.

Other common symptoms in young children include squinting, rubbing their eyes, tearing, redness of the eyes, and frequent blinking.
