The symptoms you should watch out for if you think your child is short-sighted include:

  • Needing you to hold books very close when you read to him
  • Squinting  when he’s trying to look at something far away
  • Moving closer to an object to see it clearly
  • Avoiding long distance activities such as football, bird watching.
  • Sitting closer to the television

If you think your child is having a problem seeing things at a distance, then you should make an appointment with your optician or optometrist. Even children who cannot read are able to have a visual assessment. Symbols and shapes may be used at both distance and near positions to check how well they can see. The more fun the tests appear to be the easier it is for the child to participate and co-operate.
