Leaving the hospital with your newborn baby can be a little daunting. As you say goodbye to the doctors and nurses some new mums are overwhelmed with fear and worry as they are allowed take their infant home. It is a natural part of going home with Baby but there are a few things that you needn’t be worried about at all.

Here are ten things that might worry you a little, but shouldn’t:

1. The soft spot on Baby’s head

The soft spot on your baby’s head is called the fontanelle and rather than it being a hole over their brain it is covered by a think, protective membrane.

2. Blood in a nappy

This only happens in girls as is actually a mini period which is caused by the uterus shedding a little blood.

3. Hiccupping

There are many reasons why babies commonly hiccup and can be attributed to a lack of communication between the brain and the diaphragm.

4. Acne rash

While every rash should be closely monitored, newborns often experience an acne rash caused by hormones in the body.

5. Sneezing

Rather than having a cold, your baby is likely to be congested from being in the uterus for so long.

6. Baby spitting up everything

Whatever goes down your baby is likely to come back up again, particularly fluid.

7. Pooing too much/ too little

A breastfed baby is likely to poo after nearly every meal, while a bottle fed infant usually just goes once a day.

8. Strange coloured poo

Don’t worry if you notice your baby has a strange coloured poo. Newborn poo is a greenish black before turning yellow for a few months. Breastfed babies can experience green poop.

9. They'll catch something

Your baby is born with protective antibodies which last for a few weeks so they are ok to be taken outside, although care should always be given.

10. Losing weight

A baby loses a percentage of their weight in the first few weeks and is never really a cause for concern, and your midwife or GP will keep an eye on them.
