Having to wear glasses is often the bane of a teenager’s life, especially when it appears to happen so suddenly. Unfortunately, however problems with eyesight can develop at any age and if left untreated can cause severe headaches and a decline in schoolwork.

There are signs and symptoms that your teen will complain of if their vision is worsening:

Difficulty seeing far away objects
Squinting
Rubbing eyes
Sensitivity to light
Difficulty reading
Sitting too close to the TV

Glasses are used to correct refractive errors, which occur when the eye doesn't bend light properly.

Common types of refractive errors are:

Nearsightedness: Difficulty seeing things far away.
Farsightedness: Problems seeing things up close.
Astigmatism: An abnormal curvature of the surface of the eye that causes blurred vision.

The good news is there are lots of fashionable frames available in a wide range of styles and colours that will make wearing glasses a lot more fun for your teen. Let your child pick out the frames she likes and maybe even get two pairs to match different outfits!
