Miraculously, a three-month old baby who DIED in hospital, is now alive and well, and ready to go home with his parents.

At 19 weeks, gorgeous baby Lincoln (that smile!) was diagnosed in the womb to have a number of “complex and severe” heart defects. Within weeks, his parents, Mindy and Rob Seay, from Alaska in the US, were dispatched to specialist hospital Maternal-Fetal Clinic at Legacy-Emanuel Hospital in Portland, Oregon, where a team was put in place to prepare for Lincoln’s arrival.

And when Lincoln was born, doctors performed life-saving open heart surgery on him. However, three months later his parents were told he would need a heart transplant. Terrified, all they could do was hope that doctors could find a donor.

“I can’t bring myself to think about the “what if” he doesn’t get one in time,” his mum said at the time. “I have faith and believe his heart will come right on time. I just hope that right time is soon. The wait is long and hard and I cannot wait for my baby boy to feel better and begin his little life that is destined for great, big things. I can’t wait to see that goofy, lopsided grin of his that has captured the hearts of so many.”

Thankfully, a donor was found for Lincoln, but things took a terrifying turn when he was being prepped for surgery: his heart stopped. Doctors rushed to connect him to a heart bypass machine, and after a successful transfer little Lincoln miraculously stabilised.

“He died,” recalls his mum, “He was out of time. While they were prepping him for surgery, he coded. His heart stopped. They did CPR and chest compressions without success. Because they knew the heart was en route, they went ahead and opened his chest early. It normally takes an hour or more to open a chest, and they did it in 12 minutes, while someone continued to do chest compressions. The surgeon reached in and hand compressed his heart until the donor heart arrived.”

Now the little fighter is getting stronger every day, and he has even been give the all-clear to finally go home!

“After surgery the days have been a blur,” says Mindy. “Lincoln has done SO well and his heart is so strong. They are beginning to slowly wean his sedation meds and he is waking up so charged up and energized! My baby is coming back. He has a long, hard road ahead of him, but his progress is amazing. The doctors and nurses have all come in to his room to cry and celebrate with us.”

What an amazing story! We’re thrilled this family have had their much-deserved happy ending. And we are blown away by Lincoln’s strength and ability to smile despite the battles he’s going through. What a little warrior.
