The health dangers of heavy drinking have been well-publicised for years, but often people aren’t aware of the specific damage and health risks you are opening yourself up to. Here are some of the most serious health complications that binge drinking can bring on your body.

1. Cirrhosis

Alcohol is extremely toxic to the liver, the organ in the body responsible for detoxification of what we consume. As a result, binge drinking seriously harms the liver, leaving it scarred, in some cases so badly that it is unable to function.

2. Depression

While opinion is often divided as to which comes first, depression or reliance on alcohol, recent research from experts in New Zealand showed that it is more likely that heavy drinking leads to depression. Indeed, further research found that patients’ depression improved when they gave up alcohol.

3. Seizures

Binge drinking can not only cause epilepsy, but it can also trigger seizures in people who do not have epilepsy.

4. Pancreatitis

While causing major damage to the liver, heavy drinking can also lead to inflammation of the pancreas. As well as interfering with the digestive process, this can cause severe stomach pain and even persistent diarrhoea.

5. Cancer

Research has established that binge drinking increases the risk of developing cancer, with experts believing that the risk arises from the body’s conversion of alcohol to acetaldehyde, a known carcinogen.
