As a parent, you may be wondering when is the best time to schedule an eye exam for your child. Having your child’s vision examined as early and often, means you can discover and treat any small issues before they become larger problems in later life.

Infants should have their first comprehensive eye exam at the age of six months. The next eye exam should happen around the age of three and an additional exam should happen before they begin primary school; about age five or six and every two years after that. If your child is in need of glasses, it's essential that an eye test is scheduled annually.

Early eye exams also are important because the following visual abilities are necessary for learning:
  • Near vision
  • Distance vision
  • Binocular (two eyes) coordination
  • Eye movement skills
  • Focusing skills
  • Peripheral awareness
  • Hand-eye coordination
When a child’s eyes are not working properly, this can delay their development in identifying colours, reading and socialising with other kids. It can also affect their self esteem.
