When we were younger, many of us couldn’t imagine not ever being around our friends or ever feeling lonely. Sadly though, as people grow up and move away, it is easy to grow apart and feel a little isolated.

It is important to note that even if you are living in a house full of kids, it doesn't necessarily mean you will never feel lonely - you can feel isolated from society for a whole host of reasons.

However, it is important you maintain good social interaction not just for your soul but for your mental health.

1. According to research, loneliness and a lack of social interaction can actually cause you to experience higher stress levels than those who aren’t lonely.

2. No social interaction or very little can lead to depression and suicidal thoughts.

3. You are more likely to have an unhealthy lifestyle and take part in little no exercise if you don’t interact socially .

4. According to a 2012 Harvard study, lonely people are at a greater risk of heart disease mainly due to lack of support during stressful times.

If you are feeling isolated or lonely, it is important you make a conscious effort to go out and meet people.

Try volunteering, join a club, chat with people online or get back in touch with old friends - you’ll be surprised at how many people can feel the exact same way.
