Fighting cancer requires plenty of strength, as Ashli Brehm knows. To inspire her to fight as hard as she could, her friend sent her a Wonder Woman shirt with a cape.

But it did more than that. It gave the Omaha native an idea. She decided to wear costumes to her chemotherapy treatments in order to make the experience less harrowing for her three young sons.

“My little boys saw that it was a fun day, not a scary day,” she told KETV. “And that was really important to me.”

What’s more, Ashli herself got a boost from playing dress up.

“It made me smile to see my nurses and doctors smile when they saw me. And I loved that it somehow removed the fear and made it a happy day.”

Ashli is one of the lucky ones and recently underwent her final chemo session. To mark the occasion, she wore the most special thing she owns: her wedding dress.

“I figured for my last chemo, I would wear the dress that has brought me the most luck in my life,” she said.

“And when else are you going to wear your wedding dress in public without people thinking you’re crazy? I feel like cancer’s an excuse to do crazy things.”
