Bunmi Laditan is well-known for her funny posts online, so it was surprising to read her latest one.

This time, the writer of 'The Honest Toddler' blog swapped the laughs for an honest reflection on motherhood, rolling the hardships and wonders all into one.

The intended audience for her spiel? Herself when she was pregnant, clueless and 21, asking 'Did I make a mistake?'

She takes her own, overwhelmed hand and reassures her:

"You're right, honey. It is impossible. You'll die a million times but you'll be reborn by those moments a million and one."

Bunmi went on to describe motherhood's rollercoaster-like nature.

"More days than not I wake up angry, sad, tired and scared," she wrote.

"My head is always swirling with their needs. The washing is taking over my life. My entire existence is preparing meals nobody is grateful for. I wake up in the night just to worry and check their breath."

Unsurprisingly, the post isn't entirely devoid of humour.

"It's not the kind of love that expects Valentine's or stirs butterflies," she wrote.

But even when you feel you're drowning, the slightest gesture from your child can put it all in perspective.

"Just one toddler hug, feeling those little arms grip you tight or having a child fall asleep heavy on your chest and listening to them breathe makes it worth it a million times over," she wrote.

"You’ll take in the smell of their hair and it will fill all of the cracks in your heart making you feel like the richest woman in the world.”

So next time you're panicked that you're doing it all wrong, or your house looks like a bomb hit it, take a look around and remember that - scary as it may be - motherhood is the most wonderful thing in the world.
