While it seems as though Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin handled their divorce in the best way possible for their children, it was no less painful for them than any other couple.

Now, a year on from her divorce finalisation, Gwyneth has opened up about the darker side that nobody saw.

In an interview with The Edit, the 44-year-old – who is mum to 13-year-old Apple and 11-year-old Moses – discussed her use of the term ‘conscious uncoupling’.

“I wanted to turn my divorce into a positive. What if I don’t blame the other person for anything, and held myself 100 per cent accountable?” she asked.

“What if I checked my own s**t at the door and put my children first? And reminded myself about the things about my ex-husband that I love, and fostered the friendship?

“What I put myself through to get there was the most difficult thing I’ve ever done in my life.”

The actress, who posed for a series of sun-kissed pictures in an accompanying photo shoot, refused to sugar-coat her experience – and was refreshingly honest about how she moved on from the low points.

“I’ve had an extraordinary life, where things have happened in a huge way – huge success, huge joy, huge pain, huge loss. And the reason I feel happy today is because I’ve milked the f**k out of every opportunity,” she said, candidly.

“I haven’t made one mistake that I haven’t used as a stepping stone to get somewhere else. I’m ruthless when it comes to using the hard things.”

Gwyneth’s latest comments come just a fortnight after she shared a sweet family Boomerang video, celebrating Mother’s Day with Chris and the kids.

Chris and Gwyneth announced their separation back in 2014, with a statement entitled ‘Conscious Uncoupling’.

“It is with hearts full of sadness that we have decided to separate. We have been working hard for well over a year – some of it together, some of it separated – to see what might have been possible between us, and we have come to the conclusion that while we love each other very much we will remain separate,” they wrote.

They added that they were parents ‘first and foremost’ and would be putting their children first.

It’s interesting to see another side to Gwyneth and Chris’ split – separation and divorce can be devastating for everyone, even the celebs.
