As anyone who is a parent will know, the bond you share with your child is stronger than anything else in this world; this was proven in the most amazing way to a family in North Carolina recently.

Family and doctors feared for new mum Shelly Cawley when she didn't wake from her Caesarean-section, during which daughter Rylan was safely delivered.

Recalling the traumatic wait by his wife's bedside in the intensive care unit of the hospital, husband Jeremy told People that he was beginning to fear for the worst, as the doctors 'had done all they could'.

In one final attempt to wake Shelly from her coma, doctors decided to try the skin-to-skin method and place Rylan close to her mum in a bid to wake her - what happened next is nothing short of incredible.

Rylan was stripped down and placed on her mother's chest, where it was so peaceful that she fell asleep. After 10 minutes of tickling and light-pinching, Rylan let out a wail - and it woke up her mum.

"We could see the spike in her [Shelly's] vitals on the monitor. We knew that somewhere in there she was hearing her baby. Rylan saved her mum's life," a nurse told the publication.

Shelly came out of her coma a week later, and both she and Rylan were perfectly fine. A year later, and the family have shared the story of their "miracle", to give hope to parents everywhere.

An emotional Shelly added: "I just look at her now and think of the amazing bond we have. I can tell her when she grows up that she saved my life."
