While most of us love the idea of breakfast in bed: sipping on a cup of tea, book in hand munching on toast as the sun streams in through the window but, after all these years, we have finally realised that the fantasy is oh so far from the reality!

If you have ever been lucky (or unlucky – depending on what way you want to look at it) to have ever gotten brekkie in bed, you might be familiar with a few of these things:

Something always spills

Without a doubt, something will spill! Whether it’s in the kitchen, on the journey to the bedroom or when you are trying to settle the tray on your legs, there is bound to be a spill somewhere along the way. Usually all over the bed covers that you literally just changed the previous day... But sure isn't a spill part and parcel of Mother's Day?!

There is always too much on the tray – that’s if you’re lucky to actually get a tray!

They have tried their best to get everything you love to eat on one tray - it’s like a balancing act as they creep in to the room trying not to spill anything (see above)! But it's not until you try to sit up to eat it do you realise that you too will have to do a little balancing...

The kitchen looks like something exploded

Don’t get us wrong, we absolutely love our little ones for trying their best, but no matter how much they try the kitchen ALWAYS looks like something has exploded in there. And who has to clean it up.... yeah you guessed it, mum!

The expectation to eat it all

As they look at you from their big Bambi eyes the expectation to eat everything is huge, even if the orange juice spilt all over your toast.

The substituting

The kids couldn’t find the milk so they used water in the cereal instead. They couldn’t reach the butter so your toast is dry. No sugar for the tea – let’s just try salt. The list is endless!

The odd mix of foods

Breakfast in bed always means you will be treated to the most unusual mix of foods that you ever thought imaginable. An apple with toast, a bowl of cereal and porridge or a croissant and milk – sometimes your little one’s imagination even outdoes them!

It often comes laid with your little one’s favourites

In their quest to please you, your little one will usually try to serve you up something that they think is really, really nice – usually their ideal breakfast. But pouring a mix of all the cereals in the house into a bowl might not be the ideal brekkie for mum!

Enjoy the treat ladies, it only comes around once a year!
