Looking after people isn't easy. And for neo-natal nurses, it's tougher again, especially in the emotions department.

Neo-natal nurse Brittany Denise recently shared a post about how she struggles to keep it together when babies die, or their health deteriorates, on her watch.

As she says, there’s a lot more to the job than just “feeding and rocking babies.”

“I witness miracles,” she writes. “I get to see little lives come back and beat insurmountable odds. But sometimes I don’t…”

“I help to resuscitate babies when their hearts stop and little bodies simply can’t take any more.”

“I beat myself up trying to think what we could have done better or different when all medical options have been exhausted.”

When a baby passes away, that’s when Brittany is faced with the toughest part of all: putting a dying baby back to their parents, telling them nothing can be done.

“I hand those sweet little lives to their parents as they take their last breaths when science and medicine is no longer enough.”

“I give them medication to make them comfortable in their last moments here on earth. I hug their family members as they walk away from their baby’s room for the last time, hoping my words brought them some comfort.”

Heartbreakingly, Brittany admits that sometimes it gets too much and she can’t help but take her work home with her, so to speak.

“I sometimes cry in the car on my way home, in the shower, or as I try to fall asleep before going into work to take care of other little lives.”

What a touching reminder of the amazing work that neo-natal nurses do. We take our hats off to them! You can read Brittany's full post below.
