Giving birth at a time when you’re not expecting to can be stressful and frightening, but in that moment all you care about is the health and safety of both you and your baby.

As many couples in this situation have found out however, the aftermath can bring serious problems, and that is something that a British couple have learned the hard way.

Sharon Halls is facing medical bills of potentially £185,000, after going into labour early while at a friend’s wedding in the Dominican Republic.

According to reports this weekend, Sharon’s early labour was brought on by an infection, and her partner Daniel Compton rushed her to hospital when she began experiencing contractions. The couple’s daughter, Evie, was born at 28 weeks and six days into the pregnancy.

While Sharon believed that her travel insurance broker, Infinity Insurance Solutions, would be able to cover the expensive medical costs, the company is yet to decide whether it will or not. Due to time difference, Sharon technically gave birth when she was over the 29-week mark, which was when the cover ceased to be valid.

Fearing that they will have to raise the money for the bills themselves, Sharon and Daniel have now set up a Go Fund Me page (link here) to move Evie from what they have described as a ‘dirty’ public hospital.

“The sanitation and level of care is next to nothing. [Evie] was placed in a dirty incubator lined up next to other sick newborn babies. The equipment was old and even the blanket she laid down on was stained and ripped,” wrote Sharon, on the fundraising page.

Looking ahead, Sharon and Daniel are facing into paying £1,640 a day to move Evie to a private hospital. With doctors advising for the tot to be kept in hospital for 16 weeks, the couple are looking at a potentially staggering medical bill.

Sharon and her family are in our thoughts, and we hope everything works out for the best for them.
