While the last thing on a new mum's mind is starting their own business, some use their maternity leave to kick-start their own money-making company so that they can be home with their baby.

If you have an idea of starting something and have already done your research, make sure you take note of the following tips:

1. Have set hours

Make sure you have set hours for when you are working so that you can devote time to your business and time to your baby. Mixing the two together will just end up with you feeling a lot more stressed and not actually get anything done.

2. Create a business plan

It is easy to go in all guns blazing when starting a business, but you need to make a business plan with small goals to get started. It doesn’t need to be perfect, but it will help with your motivation when it is starting to slip a little.

3. Have a work area in the home

When you have a baby to care for, the last thing you are going to want to do is clear a space on the kitchen table every time you want to do some work. So invest in a desk for the study or a certain area in the house just for work.

4. Set small, easy-to-achieve goals

While ultimately you want your business to make money, it is important you start off with small, easy-to-achieve goals. Write down what you want to get done in the next three to six months, working up to a longer goal.

5. Build up a support network

Starting a business takes a lot of time, so do build up a support network of friends and family who can mind baby when you are bogged down or have a meeting.

6. Get outside

It can be pretty lonely working from home even if you have the company of your baby, so do head outside for some fresh air at least once a day. The break and the quality time with Baby will help you focus a lot more.
