Whether bad eating habits or hectic schedules are the cause, many of us experience bloating from day to day. The following tips will help you to prevent or alleviate the problem when it raises its ugly head.

1. Stay regular

Constipation is one of the biggest reasons for bloating, and is caused when your diet doesn’t contain enough fibre or fluids, or you’re not getting enough exercise. Ensure you stay regular by consuming a diet that is rich in fibre-loaded foods (whole grains, fruit, vegetables), drinking plenty of water, and getting in at least five 30-minute exercise sessions.

2. Eat slowly

When you eat too quickly, you tend to swallow air which leads to swelling in your stomach. Experts recommend that you take at least 30 minutes to consume your food, so be sure to slow down in order to avoid bloating.

3. Avoid fizzy drinks

While you might enjoy indulging in your favourite fizzy drink every now and then, it is as bad for your stomach as it is for your teeth. The fizz from that tasty drink gets trapped in your stomach as air, bloating it, so perhaps it’s a good idea to leave it as a treat for every now and then.

4. Drink peppermint tea

If you are experiencing/ expecting a bout of bloating, one of the best ways to settle your stomach is to sip on peppermint tea. This herbal tea contains relaxant and antispasmodic properties, which relieve cramps and spasms in your tummy, allowing food and air to go through smoothly.

5. Try to de-stress

Not only does stress give you headaches and worry-lines, but it also speeds up your body processes – including those of your digestive system, causing you to experience gas. When the stress is getting to be too much, take a deep breath, go for a walk or take a yoga class – whatever you rely on to relax.
