Often at this time of the year, we tend to get a little bit preoccupied with what’s waiting for us under the tree, and this is especially true of our little ones. However, if we sat them down and had a really honest chat, would they change their minds about what they want for Christmas?

An experiment carried out by much-loved furniture company IKEA has proven that, when we really get down to brass tacks, all our little ones truly want is the love and company of their parents.

In the experiment, a group of children were asked to write two letters: one to the three kings, asking for their Santa gifts; and another to their parents, with requests from the heart. The letters were then boxed up and sent to their parents to read – and the results moved many of them to tears.

While games and guitars topped the lists to the three kings, money couldn’t buy the items requested of their parents: to spend more time with them, to have dinner together, and to play with them more.

And as touched as the parents were after reading the letters, many of them were not surprised to learn of what their children truly desire. Indeed, the conclusion they came to was that toys really cannot substitute time spent with your family.
