Floaters don’t need treatment unless they are indicative of another underlying problem, such as a retinal detachment or tear.  Detachment or tears require surgery to re-attach the part of the retina that has become detached.

Floaters can be removed by surgery but this is generally only in extreme cases where vision is affected. In cases such as this, a victrectomy procedure removes the gel like vitreous and replaces it with a saline like liquid.

It is important to be aware that the sudden appearance of floaters accompanied by flashes of light, and periods of vision loss is indicative of a retinal tear or detachment and immediate medical attention is required.
