Treatment for neonatal conjunctivitis will vary depending on the cause. Antibiotic eye drops are given to all newborn babies to help prevent infection. Here is a comprehensive list of treatments prescribed depending on the cause:

Blocked tear duct: In cases where conjunctivitis is caused by a blocked tear duct then the doctor will generally recommend warm compresses and gentle massage between the eye and nasal area. If the blocked tear duct is not cleared within the first year, surgery may be required.

Inclusion (chlamydial) conjunctivitis: oral antibiotics are usually prescribed.

Gonococcal conjunctivitis: Intra venous antibiotics are usually prescribed and a saline rinse may be used to remove the pus.

Chemical conjunctivitis: In cases where they eyes have become irritated by eye drops given to prevent infection the conjunctivitis will generally clear up itself within a few days. It is usually nothing to worry about.

Other bacterial and viral conjunctivitis: Antibiotic drops or ointments are usually prescribed.

In all cases, a warm compress will help to relieve the swelling and irritation. It is extremely important to wash hands before and after touching the infected eyes.
