Maria Flores left 2017 after birthing a baby boy, and welcomed in 2018 by delivering his twin sister.

The twins will never have to debate over who is the eldest after being delivered in California, much to the shock of medical staff.

Arriving three weeks premature, Joaquin Jr. Ontiveros and Aitana de Jesus Ontiveros were due on the 27th of January, but the twins had other plans.

Joaquin was born at 11.58pm, with Aitana following at 12.16am. Both were healthy weights and without any other complications.

As per the hospital's tradition, the first baby of the year receives $3,000 worth of supplies, toys and clothes.

Speaking to local media, Dr. Seyed Tamjidi, who delivered the babies, said:

"I've been in the practice for almost 30 plus years. I've never had the opportunity to do anything like that before."

Flores said that she's just happy that the babies are healthy and that she's delighted with the free goodies as she didn't get to go shopping before the birth.

We guess the "I'm a year older than you" joke will be used a lot in this household!
