We’ve all felt pretty awful on days when we’ve come down with bad cramps, but you have to know that something’s up when it brings you to your knees.

This was the case for Canadian woman Ashley Zezula earlier this month, when she discovered she was in labour – but had no clue she was pregnant in the first place.

Ashley was travelling home from a trip with her partner, Mike Innes, when she began experiencing cramps. Up to that point she had been getting regular periods, and had not experienced any pain, kicking or cravings.

The pains got progressively worse, and by the time Ashley reached home, she was doubled-over on the toilet.

Ashley recalled the experience to local news station Global News, saying that she wound up using the mirror on her eye-shadow palette to look inside of her body.

She explained: “I was like, ‘Michael, there’s something in me! Oh my God!’ I’m screaming, and he’s like, ‘It’s probably just something you ate.’ And I was like, ‘No, I don’t know if it’s a tumour! I don’t know what’s happening!’”

While Ashley couldn’t make out what exactly was inside of her, she knew it was time to call a doctor.

Emergency services were called and arrived on the scene shortly after, only to discover Ashley in the throes of labour. To make matters even more complicated, the baby was breech.

Ashley was rushed to hospital after giving birth to son Raymond at home. Jaundice aside, the baby is said to be healthy and tipped the scales at 7lbs 7oz.

Despite the fact that Ashley and Mike had not been planning or expecting a family, they have described little Raymond as a ‘miracle’.
