The birth of any baby is worthy of joyful celebration, but the specifics of this American woman’s story are very special indeed.

A new mum from Baltimore, US has made headlines after giving birth to extremely rare identical triplets this month.

Kristen and Tom Hewitt welcomed their beautiful tots Tripp, Finn and Ollie this month, but were taken aback when their doctors explained the unique circumstances of their births.

According to doctors at Kristen’s hospital, the odds of identical triplets being conceived without fertility treatments could be as high as one in two million.

Dr Victor A. Khouzami, who delivered the boys, told local media: “Incidence of fraternal twins are much higher (90 percent) than identical (10 percent), but, it is even a more significant ratio for triplets.”

He added that while his hospital can deliver anything between 30 to 40 sets of triplets a year, the Hewitt triplets are the first set of identical triplets to be born there.

Despite Kristen being diagnosed with pre-eclampsia a week-and-a-half before going into labour, all three boys were born in “excellent condition”.

Congratulations to the couple on their wonderful news.
