Viewers praise Call The Midwife for emotional suffragette storyline

There’s no doubt every episode of Call The Midwife has left us teary-eyed. The show always tugs on our heartstrings and leaves us sobbing on the sofa after the end credits roll.

The loveable characters, harrowing tales and touching storylines take hold of your heart from the get-go.

We were overjoyed when the show returned for its eighth series earlier this month and it certainly hasn’t disappointed fans so far.

Last night’s episode of the beloved drama series was praised by viewers for the moving storyline about elderly suffragette Clarice Millgrove.

Annette Crosbie’s performance had viewers in floods of tears as her character struggled to look after herself.

The strong suffragette was incapable of taking care of herself in her own home which had become a prison, but she refused to leave.

Nurse Lucille did her very best to take care of Clarice, who she grew rather close to throughout the episode.

In the end, Clarice knew that she had to leave her home behind. She stayed strong until the very end, refusing to let the police escort her from her home, and exited the property with dignity and strength.

The one touching detail that really got to viewers was the fact that Clarice wore her suffragette medal as she left her house behind, proving that they may take away her home, but they’ll never take away her achievements.

Viewers were quick to gush about the touching episode on Twitter: “Suffragettes saw the cruelty and the bravery of their society. Every woman in Britain should be thankful for them and their sacrifices. Vote in every election and don't disconnect from the importance of our history.”

Another wrote: “So it was Annette Crosbie playing a former Suffragette who made me cry this week! I always find it incredible how a show set in the 50s/60s can be so relevant, especially when it comes to women's issues.”

“'Courage calls to courage everywhere'. Spotted Clarice wearing the Suffragette colours. Loving that #callthemidwife is honouring those brave women of the past so I can take part in democracy today,” said one user.

We are already so excited for next Sunday’s episode of Call The Midwife. Have the tissues at the ready.
