It took a long time for rapper Jay-Z to come clean about what was very much a known truth: he was unfaithful to his wife, mother of his three children and general goddess, Beyoncé.

Since the release of Beyoncé's Lemonade (quite the tell-all as critics and fans will attest), the rapper has been more candid about the troubles in his marriage, with multiple reports saying that for him and the 36-year-old singer, their children Blu Ivy and twins Rumi and Sir.

“It took Beyoncé a long time to trust again. She was struggling to move on and forgive. But keeping her family together was very important,” a source told People. "If it wasn’t for Blue Ivy, they might not be together. It took them years to get to the point where they are now."

Jay-Z candidly spoke on CNN about their choice to fight for their marriage and stay together, despite their issues, describing Beyoncé as his "soul mate."

He said that his wife was simply "my soul mate, the person I love."

"Couples experiencing problems can either "address it or pretend until it blows up," he said on The Van Jones Show on CNN.

"For us, we chose to fight for our love. For our family. To give our kids a different outcome. To break that cycle for black men and women."

He said that, for them, the key to working through marital difficulties, regardless of one's fame, is having "the tools to move forward."

“We were never a celebrity couple, we were a couple that happened to be celebrities. We are real people.”

The 48-year-old addressed his marital issues head-on in his latest album 4.44, apologising to his wife and three children for his infidelities.

"I apologize often womanize/ Took for my child to be born/ See through a woman's eyes/ Took for these natural twins to believe in miracles/ Took me too long for this song/ I don't deserve you," he rapped.
