While we may complain about them every month, our periods are possibly the greatest internal alarm systems that we have. It’s important to listen to our bodies and what they tell us about our health, and our periods can send us signals when something is up. Here are just five conditions that may be indicated through irregularities with your period.

1. Anaemia

Having a very heavy flow can indicate that you may be suffering from anaemia, a condition in which your blood lacks red blood cells (haemoglobin). A lack of haemoglobin results in reduced ability to absorb oxygen, which can leave you feeling tired, dizzy, and can cause headaches.

2. Eating disorder

One of the first signs of an eating disorder is an irregular pattern with your periods, whether noticeably lighter or completely absent. For those who have not come to terms with their disorder, or haven’t realised the serious implications on your health, this should serve as a sign that you really need to consult with your doctor.

3. Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)

Women living with PCOS suffer from a hormone imbalance, which can cause fertility problems as well as issues with their period. As hormonal birth control can help with treatment, it is important to go to your doctor if you are concerned.

4. Thyroid disease

Your thyroid plays a key role in hormone production and regulation, so irregularities in your period can indicate problems with the gland. If you have been experiencing changes in your flow, you may want to consult with your doctor.

5. Endometriosis

As periods go, cramps are unfortunately par for the course, but severe cramps could be a sign that there is something bigger at play. Severe cramps can be a sign of endometriosis which, if left untreated, can affect your fertility.
