Reports have come in that a woman in her fifties has been arrested after a three-week-old baby died.

According to reports, the woman in Oldham has been held on suspicion of overlaying – which is when a baby dies after someone lies on top of them cutting off their air supply.

The baby was rushed to Royal Oldham Hospital but was sadly pronounced dead a short while later.

Dave Moores, Det Insp, said: “This is an absolutely tragic case in which a baby who is barely three weeks old has died. Any death of a baby is always extremely upsetting and keenly felt by family members and even the wider community.”

He added: “An investigation is under way and we are committed to identifying how and why this baby died. We also have officers supporting family members at what is clearly a very distressing time for them.”

Our thoughts are with the family during this tragic time.
