Attending weddings can be a tricky business if you’re single. It’s not a lot of fun to sit at a table full of couples and feel left out or worse be relegated to a table with a creepy bachelor uncle who keeps eyeing you up.

One woman decided to take matters into her own hands when she wanted to bring a plus one to an upcoming wedding.

As Llia Apostolou didn’t have a special man in her life, she took to Twitter and asked if anyone would like to be her date for her sister’s wedding.

“Are you a man? Can I borrow you for a wedding next weekend? Bonus points if you can source a baby that I can pretend is mine too,” Llia joked, not realising fate was about to intervene and change her life forever.

To Llia’s surprise, just minutes after the tweet was posted, a gentleman named Phil Gibson, offered himself for the role.

“I can do this, I’ve got a suit and everything!” he responded.

Llia cheekily replied “See you at the altar” to which a slightly concerned Phil joked “It’s a date! Just a date though, right?”

The pair flirted back and forth with Phil telling Llia his grandmother already wanted to meet her.

Llia didn’t actually bring Phil along to the wedding, given that it was a family occasion but they did meet up shortly afterwards and sparks flew.

She said: “I should clarify, we didn't go to that wedding together (it was my sister's, imagine!) but Phil and I did meet in real life for the first time that week.

"But still - I jokingly wished to marry him, having not even met him, and it happened. Still blows my mind."

Three years on, Llia and Phil finally attended a wedding together – their own nuptials!

The lovebirds shared a cute photo of themselves to Twitter after their wedding, almost three years to the day they first met online.

“Did it! Here's me and my wife @Llia on the way back from the registry office,” a proud Phil wrote beside their wedding photo.

As love stories go, it might not be the most traditional but it’s still totally romantic! The happy couple are now off enjoying their honeymoon.

Congrats Llia and Phil.
