You can do better: Strictly slated for lineup but does it really matter?

Strictly season is officially here and we are very excited for TV’s glitziest and cheesiest show to return to our screens. However, it looks like the show could lose out on a huge chunk of it’s audience this year.

Strictly have been sharing the names of celebrities who will strut their stuff on the dancefloor this year but the public are not impressed with the lineup.

Obviously we weren’t expecting the likes of Kate Moss, Richard Madden, Prince Harry and Olivia Colman to be part of the lineup, but the public have claimed this year’s group of celebrities is the worst yet.

The full lineup includes former footballer David James, comedian Chris Ramsey, EastEnders star Emma Barton, YouTuber Saffron Barker, Coronation Street’s Catherine Tyldesley.

BBC Breakfast’s Mike Bushell, CBBC presenter Karim Zeroual, Viscountess Emma Weymouth, Paralympian Will Bayley, RuPaul’s Drag Race judge Michelle Visage and DJ Dev Griffin.

Made In Chelsea star Jamie Laing, former footballer and presenter Alex Scott, Olympic rower James Cracknell and Anneka Rice complete the lineup.

There was uproar as each celebrity was revealed, with fans constantly asking ‘who are they?’

People expressed their disgust on Twitter, ‘I hate to play the "who?" card but this years line up is really shocking so far. I quite like not knowing and getting to know, the odd celeb here & there but this year takes the proverbial. You can do better! #Strictly’

Another said, ‘Nothing against any of the people on the new series of Strictly, but the line-up isn’t exactly scintillating is it? I thought it was meant to be the biggest show on TV? Can’t they find a few big-ish names?’

Journalist Sarah Doran argued, ‘#Strictly will be brilliant, no matter who’s in the line-up. You get to know them and end up rooting for them. Look at all the people who said ‘who?’ to Joe Sugg last year! He ended up being a household fave. And the Pros make the show as much as the contestants do anyway!’

Does the lineup truly matter? Do we always know each and every celebrity taking part in the dance show? No.

It isn’t just the celebrities that make Strictly one of the country’s most-loved shows. It’s the sheer joy of the show, the cringey jokes, the pro-dancers, the judges, the hosts, the costumes and the band.

The lineup may be a little lacklustre this year, but we were never going to get those A list stars. It may not be as strong as previous years but there’s no doubt you’ll be cheering for these ‘unknown’ celebrities by week six when they’re waltzing and cha-cha-chaing their way across the Strictly dance floor.
