From as far back as we can remember, birthdays have been a delightful occasion that are accompanied by amazing presents wrapped up in beautiful paper and bows.

Naturally, this Chinese man expected the same of his 20th birthday present from his parents last week, but it turns out that he was very, very wrong.

Poor Yuma Hasegawa was handed an envelope bearing a rather nasty shock instead of a pleasant surprise – a letter entitled ‘Notice of Expiration of Child-Rearing Services’.

The letter, which was uploaded by Yuma to Twitter, read: “As of October 4, 2015, your father, Yoshikazu Hasegawa, and mother, Chiaki Hasegawa, have completed their duties of raising their child: you, Yuma Hasegawa, please become a proper and responsible member of society, like your father and mother.”

Yuma is then provided with a bullet-pointed list of advice for this new phase of his life, including that he pay his pension, not drive while intoxicated, and discuss any future potential wife with them in case they don't approve! In yet another unpleasant surprise, Yuma is informed that he must now start paying $168 in rent and household expenses.

“Please enjoy your life as an adult,” reads the final line.

Yuma has since insisted that his parents were only joking with their letter….we hope they are, for his sake!
