It can take a few months for your body to return to normal after having a baby, with the return of your menstrual cycle being the top of the agenda for many women.

Here’s what you need to know:

When will it start?

The return of your period depends on whether you are breast or bottle feeding. If you are solely feeding your little one yourself, your period may not return until you stop fully breastfeeding or start to combine with bottle. This is your body’s way to prevent another pregnancy (although it is not a foolproof method of contraception). A woman’s period can return six to eight weeks after having a baby – but only if you are not exclusively breastfeeding.

What about blood clots?

Don’t panic if you spot a few blood clots in your flow the first time, this is perfectly normal. However, if they persist for more than a week you should contact your doctor just to let them know.

Will it be different?

You may find your period is heavier and more painful than before and can last longer, sometimes even up to two weeks. It is important to remember that it is very different for every woman; some women find cramps ease up after giving birth, others complain they become much stronger, while a few might not experience any change at all.

Am I still fertile?

It is important to realise that even if your periods have yet to return to normal, you are still fertile and there is a chance that you could get pregnant if you have unprotected sex – remember, ovulation starts two weeks before your period.

Will it be like it was before?

Your first few periods after childbirth will probably be erratic lasting longer or shorter than normal. You might also notice your flow is now heavier or lighter.

The most important thing to remember is that every woman is different and every pregnancy is different, so don’t worry if it doesn’t return like it did on your first pregnancy or if your friend’s symptoms are not the same as yours. If you are concerned about anything, you should always talk to your GP.
