Breaking up before you had kids meant that you could literally walk away from each other and never have to deal with the meeting the new girlfriend situation.

However, this is obviously something you can’t do when there are kids involved and, no matter how awkward you might feel, you will eventually have to meet their new partner.

If you are a little anxious about seeing them for the first time, take note of these tips:

1. Don’t compare yourself to them

We’ve all been there, comparing our hair, outfit and even personality with our ex’s new love, but it does nothing but make you feel bad about yourself.

2. Don’t expect to be bosom buddies

Over time you may become quite close with each other, particularly if your kids will have regular contact with them, but don’t expect this to happen overnight.

3. Do try to be happy for them

If you aren’t in a relationship yourself or are still holding onto feelings for your ex, it can be hard to be happy for them, but do try, at least for the sake of the kids.

4. Don’t reminisce on your relationship

Things will just get a little awkward if you start reminiscing on the things you and your ex used to get up to – awkward for them, you and the kids.

5. Do be enthusiastic about meeting her

The kids will look up to you to see how to behave so try to be enthusiastic about meeting her. The fact that you are being introduced is a sign that the relationship is not going anywhere so do try to make it easier on your kids.
