During pregnancy, you may find that your hair and nails go through a few changes. You may notice that your hair is a lot fuller and that your nails are growing a lot quicker.

This is quite common for expectant mothers, although changes vary from woman to woman. The changes are due to the fact that you are not losing as much hair as you normal would have, due to an increase in the hormone oestrogen which prolongs the growth phase.

You may also begin to notice that your hair becomes a lot shinier than it normal would be. For some women, the texture of your hair can also change, for instance, if you usually have curly hair you may find it is now straighter. While those with short hair may notice the change, it is more noticeable in women who have longer hair.

Unfortunately, the hair on you head is not the only thing that changes and you may notice an increase in your facial and body hair. However, you should always avoid using bleaches or depilatories to remove any excess hair.

While your nails may grow longer they may also become stronger or even more brittle. If you find your nails are brittle, regularly use a moisturiser to protect the nails and surrounding skin.

Most of these changes are only temporary and will usually go back to normal after the birth of your baby.
