All parents want to know if their children are happy. At the end of the day that’s all you can hope for. How can you tell if your school aged child is happy or not?

The following is a list of signs that you can watch out for:

Learn to read the signs
When your child was a baby and a toddler it was far easier to tell what his mood was. He burst into a huge smile when he saw you and he cried when he was hungry, tired or unhappy.  Now that he is older, the outward signs that he isn’t happy aren’t as obvious but it’s still quite easy to identify them.

Make time for fun
You might not realise it, but your child is happiest spending time with you. That’s the first key to creating a happy child, connect with them, play with them. If you’re enjoying yourself and having fun then so are they!

Encourage their talents
It may not seem an obvious one but happy people are often people who have mastered a skill. For instance, when your child practices riding a bike, he learns from earlier mistakes and he will experience the joy of succeeding due to his own efforts.

Healthy children are happy children
Lots of sleep, exercise and a healthy diet are important for everyone’s well being, especially children’s.

Let them workk out problems
Parents can sometimes try to resolve all their children’s problems but it’s not always possible. By letting them solve the little problems, it will give them a sense of accomplishment and independence.

Finally, check in with your child
It can’t hurt to ask them “Are you happy, is everything okay?” Chances are all you will get is an eye-roll or a shrug of the shoulders, but it let’s your child know that you care and that they can open up to you.
