The internet is a great resource for kids of all ages when doing homework; however, as it contains so much information, mums can often worry that their child is doing anything but school work on the computer. Thankfully, there are ways to make their time spent online all the more productive and safe.
Parental controls
Make sure your computer has parental controls set to on. Depending on your browser there are a number of ways to ensure safe searching so check out the filters on your individual computer. However, they won’t ensure your child is completely safe online so check in on them every now and then to see what they are clicking on.
Use reputable websites
If your child’s teacher has asked your youngster to look up something online they will usually give them a particular website to go to. However, if they don’t, it is important you only use reputable sites and ones that look familiar. Make sure your internet security, such as McAfee is on – this will scan for viruses and let you know if the link you are about to click on is safe. Not only will this protect your child, it will also help to prevent a virus being accidently downloaded onto your computer or laptop.
Genuine research or cheating?
Before allowing your child to use the internet, establish whether it is a homework requirement or if they are trying to cheat and make it easier. It is important your little one doesn’t come to rely on the web to provide them with all the answers – encourage them to try to work out an issue before resorting Google o other search browsers.
Where to put the computer
If possible, avoid keeping the computer in a room where your child will be doing their homework. Having it right beside them can be a huge incentive to use it, but it is important it is only called on when necessary. Keep it in a room where you will be going in and out of so that rather than becoming the easy way out of doing homework, it requires effort to go to it.
