As schools start to wind down, mums everywhere will have the tedious tasks of cleaning uniforms and emptying out their child’s schoolbag. While the first one is not too bad, it’s the second thing mums have to do – cleaning the bag – that’s hardcore!

If, like most of us, you haven’t cleaned it out since January, you are sure to spot one or all of the following ten things.

1. A rotten apple*

They haven’t been given an apple for lunch in a while so you can only imagine how long it’s been there!  *This applies to all forms of fruit and veg, not just the humble Granny Smith.

2. Notes from January

Wondering why you were the only mum not to be told about the school panto? Well, it could have been because your darling stuffed the note into the Tardis that is her school bag.

3. Their ‘lost’ copybook

You searched high up and low down for this particular copy – you probably don’t want to talk about it this minute...

4. Lots of art and crafts

Every drawing, painting or craft that they did during the year will make its way home between now and July. Now begins the quest of figuring out what to do with them all!

5. A sock

You find one every single year, and you can never figure out how it got there.

6. Dry markers

It’s a miracle the marker didn’t soak into the bottom of the bag or any of the school books.

7. Toys they snuck into class

Whether it’s a toy pony, a tiny racing car or a little teddy there is always something hiding under all their books!

8. Money

And a fair amount of it!

9. Sweet wrappers

You don’t even remember giving them sweets going to school... This one’s a bit of a mystery.

10. Glitter

Usually because it just fell off the hundreds of pictures they've brought home.
