While ‘must have phenomenal organisational skills’ naturally comes under the job description of being a mum, at back-to-school time we’re really put to the test.

From lunch prep, to uniforms, to kids that refuse to get up because they’ve become accustomed to a month or so of glorious lie-ins, it can certainly be a challenge.

So, to make this time of transition a little less stressful for busy mums, here are five of our top tips to get organised with ease:

1. Prep for sambos

One of the major headaches for mums at back-to-school time is getting those lunches sorted. They have to be healthy, tasty and they can’t go mushy by 11am – a harder ask than many might think! So we suggest creating a special area in the fridge for easy sambo assembly. Simply fill a large plastic container with smaller ones, and in each foodsaver pop a different sandwich filling like cheese, sliced onion and cold meats. This hack ensures morning sandwich-making is just a matter of pop and drop!

2. Label, label, label

As we’re sure you’re aware, school things cost a lot of money, and as we’re sure you’re equally aware, kids have a special knack for losing their stuff. Plan for this by labelling everything. We love label brand Stuck On You. They create gorgeous, quality washing machine and dishwasher-proof labels for clothes, shoes, lunch boxes and stationery, as well as tags for schoolbags. And with our nifty code MUMMYPAGES10, you can save £10 on the Classic Super Value Kit, getting 229 personalised labels for just £19.95.

3. Make a cubby

“Mum, where are my shoes / school bag / sports stuff?” is a common panicked plea on weekday mornings. So rather than waste time running around looking for said items, we suggest creating a designated cubby area for them. Let the kids know it’s their responsibility to offload these items in the cubby each day after school. It’ll become habit – eventually.

4. Clear the clutter

While January is technically the start of the New Year, we always think September feels more like a fresh beginning. So what better time to have a clear out? Go through the kids’ rooms and round up old toys and clothes and pop to a local charity shop. The lack of clutter will help your mind feel calm and ready for the school year ahead.

5. Write it down

We’ve so much on our plates as mums that if we don’t write something down, there’s a good chance we’ll have forgotten it five minutes later. So we suggest investing in a corkboard, whiteboard or blackboard and attaching it to the wall in the kitchen. On it you can put the daily routine, things to do and upcoming events. Having it right in front of you means you'll be far less likely to forget it.
