Now that the summer holidays are finally upon us, some mums and teachers might start to worry that the kids will forget everything they learned over the past year.

Thankfully, there are things that you can do to help keep their little minds active during the long break.

Cooking
Teach your youngster to read simple recipes, understand the importance of proper measurements and learn the art of making delicious and tasty cakes. Start off with simple recipes like cupcakes but as your little one becomes used to reading the recipe method and understands how to take measurements, move them up to trickier cakes and dishes.

Science experiments
Science experiments are not only fun, they are educational too. Show your son or daughter how to make bubbles, teach them about static electricity and help them to understand the power of air. There are plenty of science experiments that big kids can do as well as preschoolers.

Gardening
If the weather is nice, get your little one outside and teach them all about the garden, how plants grow and how animals and insects work to sustain the environment. Set up a vegetable patch in one corner and teach your child how to nurture it and what to do once it is ready to be harvested.

Music
Sign your youngster up for music classes during the summer and they can go back to school with a whole new skill. Learning to play an instrument is not just about learning to play a song off by heart. It is about knowing ahow to read music and understanding the right cords and when to use them. If music classes are out of your price range, YouTube offers great tutorials for learning an instrument and you can even pick up some great teaching books in any good music store.

Arts and crafts and drama
Let your child explore their creative side by supplying them with plenty of art and craft equipment. Give them plays and stories to read and let them act out their own interpretations. Why not host plays in your house once a month and let your child’s friends get in on unleashing their creative side.
