Money is a way of life and something that all children will have to deal with eventually, which makes it important to ensure they have a good grasp of how to handle it from an early age. Unfortunately, some mums are teaching bad habits without even realising it.

To help you stop, firstly you need to recognise where it is you are going wrong.

You give money whenever they ask
If you give money to your child whenever they ask for it they will find it difficult to associate hard work with a financial reward. They will simply get into the habit of expecting to be handed money whenever they want it. This is turn will cause them to struggle to appreciate the value of money.

You don’t talk about money
While you don’t need to talk about the ins and outs of your financial situation, not talking about it at all will make them unaware of it. Talk about how much things cost, how you have to sacrifice getting one thing for another and how you decide between what you want and what you need. Do this from an early age so they establish good habits as soon as possible.

You don’t allow them earn money
Whether it is by doing chores or extra activities to help you out, if you don’t give your little one the opportunity to earn their own money they will struggle to associate money with hard work.

You don’t let them use their savings
If you do manage to get your little one to put away some of their allowance or birthday money they need to be able to reap the rewards of saving. By encouraging them to save but not allowing them to use at least of potion of it will simply discourage them from saving at all. To them there won’t be a point.

You moan about having to work
It’s ok to vent some frustration if you’ve had a hard day but constantly moaning about having to go to work will simply give your little one a bad attitude towards working. And if they don’t want to go to work even before they are old enough to have a job, they may struggle when the time comes to actually grow up.
