School children in the UK have been doing something very special in a bid to break a world record.

More than 500 school children performed as many random acts of kindness as they could in one day in hopes of setting a new world record.

From handing out flowers to giving hugs and high-fives, children were busy making their local areas happy and asked those they met to continue the good work.

Currently, the world record is proudly held by Bristol after they completed 19,000 random acts of kindness.

13 different primary schools in the Derby area took part and they will now all have to wait until next week to hear if they have done enough.

One of the event’s organisers, Lisa Higginbottom told The Express:

“I’m absolutely gobsmacked at how many people are here. It’s fantastic.

“All these children are really enjoying it and spreading smiles and happiness and that’s fantastic.

“I think this event it something the children will remember for years to come and that’s the aim.”

Organisers are hoping the lasting effect of an event like this is still going to be seen in years to come.

“It gets them out of the classroom and they can come down and spread some joy. Seeing the faces of people who are receiving the gifts is priceless.

“There’s so much doom and gloom at the minute. Negative things are happening in the city and there’s been violence and attacks.

“So to send out a message that smiling and being happy is very important.”
