Just because you have kids doesn’t mean you have to give up on going to music festivals or anything. Whether you are going to a festival or just an outdoor gig, these six tips will ensure both of you and your little one are safe and have a great time:

Choose wisely
When it comes to picking which festival or outdoor gig to go to make sure you choose wisely. Not all festivals are family-friendly and some may not be suitable for taking the kids to. Try to go for one that is on during the day. At least that way if you have to leave early to avoid the rush out your little one would have experienced it.

Be prepared
When it comes to going to gigs with kids, you need to be prepared. Long gone are the days of simply throwing on your wellies and heading out the door. Write a list in advance of what you need for all eventualities: black bags to sit on in case it rains, rainwear, bottles of water - but make sure they are unopened as you won’t be allowed bring them in if they are - and plenty of suncream.

Will your kids like it?
There is no point bringing your little one along to a gig if they don’t like crowds or loud noises. Not only will they be uncomfortable and feel uneasy, gigs are expensive and there is no point wasting money when your little one really does not want to go. So, make sure you ask your little one if they would like to go first.

Safety
Make sure you have a safety point to meet if someone goes missing. Tell them not to move from that point until someone comes to get them. Point out stewards and safe people to go to if they do end up lost. If possible give your little one a mobile phone for the day. Write your name and mobile number on their arm and as an added precaution, in case there is no signal, write down the name of someone who is not at the gig as well.

First aid
While there will be a first aid tent there, make sure you bring your own plasters and antiseptic cream. It will save you the hassle of having to find the first aid tent just for a tiny, little cut. Make sure you bring toilet rolls and hand gel. Sometimes the toilets provided at gigs leave a little to be desired and so you will benefit from bringing your own stuff. Use the hand gel before your little one goes to eat or drink anything.

Eat and drink
Make sure you and your little one are well hydrated and fed. Queues for food and drink stalls can get pretty long so try to avoid going at peak times. Check to see if you can bring food with you to the gig as it is not always possible, so make sure you read the fine print or ring the organisers if needs be.
