The humble barbecue has to be one of the best things about this time of year.

Not only does it get the kids out in the fresh air, it’s also a great way to spend some quality time together. And then there’s the food!

To keep it fun and stress-free, here are a few top BBQ tips…

Safety first

If you can, set up the barbecue in a corner, away from the outdoor seating area. Keep the fire extinguisher handy, just in case. It’s ideal to have another adult present if you’re the one busy barbecuing.

Also, make sure you don't undercook the meat, especially with chicken. It's important not to overcook it either - burnt meat is a carcinogen.

Keep them busy

Another way to keep your child safe is to keep them busy. Let your little one be in charge of one of the simpler tasks. For instance, get them to set the table, help make the salad or put out the sauces and crisps.

Older kids might be able to lend a hand with the cooking, but only under strict supervision.

Get snacking

If your child is starving, no amount of jobs or distractions will keep them from coming up to the barbecue and pestering you. With that in mind, it’s good to have small bites as ‘starters’.

We’re thinking crackers and cheese, carrot and hummus dips, and chopped fruit.

Veg it up

While barbecues are all about the meat, don’t miss the chance to sneak a few veggies into your child’s dinner.

Most kids won’t take much notice of a thinly-sliced tomato or piece of onion in their burger, especially if there’s plenty of ketchup or mayonnaise in there. Another great idea is to serve grilled corn on the cob with a bit of butter and salt. Yum!

Get Sticky

Yes, chicken wings and drumsticks can be messy but they’re fun and that’s what barbecuing with the family should be. Now is not the time to get hung up on cleanliness. Just relax and enjoy!

Keep it thrifty

Quality meat doesn't have to cost an arm and a leg. Iceland have a fantastic range of healthy, Irish meats on offer at the moment, perfect for family barbecues.

We love the Hot & Spicy Pork Loin Steaks (6 pack £3) and the Chicken & Chorizo Kebabs (6 pack £3). For dessert, you can't go wrong with Iceland Toffee & Vanilla Cones (6 for £1). Delish!

Have a plan B

If it rains, as it can do in our part of the world, have an alternative plan for dinner. Bring out the board games, play cards, have some family films lined up or try some good old-fashioned storytelling. Whatever you do, it doesn’t hurt to be prepared.
