We regularly publish tongue-in-cheek pieces lauding the benefits of the grape, but this one is a little more serious.

Yep, according to a new study published in the Endocrine Society’s Journal of Clinical Endrocrinology & Metabolism, a glass of red wine a day could actually help women who are trying to become pregnant.

This is because red wine contains resveratrol, a natural compound that has been proven to reduce incidences of Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) – which is one of the main causes of infertility in women.

PCOS causes women to produce excess androgen and testosterone, but scientists now say the resveratrol can lower this extra testosterone quite significantly.

30 women with PCOS were either given a reservatrol supplement or a placebo over three months. Those taking the resveratrol found that their testosterone levels dropped by over 23 per cent, while those who took the placebo found it increased by almost three per cent.

“Our study is the first clinical trial to find resveratrol significantly lowers PCOS patients’ levels of testosterone as well as dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS), another hormone that the body can convert into testosterone.

“This nutritional supplement can help moderate the hormone imbalance that is one of the central features of PCOS.”

It’s worth knowing that resveratrol also occurs in grapes and nuts – but hey, that’s not as fun as glass of vino, right?
