Children learn about the concept of addition during their preschool years. Addition, as with all mathematical concepts is taught and learning is built on the foundations of these taught concepts.

As your child gets older, children will become more confident with their addition skills. Younger children will count on their fingers or rely on blocks or objects to reduce the load on their working memory.

After the age of 7 or 8 your child should no longer be relying on counters and if he is it may be indicative of a learning difficulty.
Children will best learn the concept of addition through fun and motivating activities. Therefore, parents should try not to reproduce a classroom environment sticking instead to fun and educational games.
