Everyone feels nervous every now and then but when it starts to affect your life on a frequent, more aggressive level, it’s time to sort it out.

But how can you tell if you have crossed a line in terms of everyday anxiety and something a little more serious?

While it is always important you talk to your GP if you have any concerns about your health, the following symptoms are a sign you need to take things a little more seriously:

1. You worry excessively

If you experience persistent anxious thoughts on a daily basis that are interfering with your normal daily tasks you could be suffering from Generalised Anxiety Disorder.

2. You can’t sleep

While struggling to fall asleep at night can be down to a number of reasons, if you are constantly lying awake because you are agitated or worried something needs to be looked at further.

3. Muscle tension

Clenching your jaw, flexing your hands or feeling constant tension in your neck and shoulders can be a symptom of an anxiety disorder.

4. You worry for days before an event happens

Stage fright is a completely normal thing, but constantly worrying for days or even weeks about a meeting, outing or event is not.

5. Panic attacks

While having a panic attack doesn’t necessarily mean you have an anxiety disorder, it can be a sign. A scary and terrifying thing, a panic attack includes racing heart, tingling hands, sweating, weakness or dizziness usually coming from nowhere.

Always talk to your GP if you are worried about anything.
