The decorations are up in the shops, Starbucks has their Eggnog latte and Michael Buble’s ‘Santa Baby’ is playing in Brown Thomas…yes, Christmas is pretty much here. So that means its Christmas movie time and ‘Arthur Christmas’ is the perfect seasonal movie that will really get you into the Christmas spirit.

In ‘Arthur Christmas’ the reigning Santa Claus is coming to the end of his term in the red suit and his efficient, reliable and joyless son Steven is set to take his place. However Steven’s position as the next Santa is put into question when a child is left without a present. The only member of the Claus family who wants to put things right is the jolly, accident-prone Arthur.

In this movie Christmas is run like a business and Santa Claus is the CEO of a massive, merry company. Its operation is now dependent on technology and has become so efficient that the only person who still possesses the real joy of Christmas is Arthur. Arthur is Santa’s youngest son and he brings that warm, fuzziness that is present in every Christmas classic. However, nowadays children need more than that to keep them entertained, and so there are plenty of gags provided by the hilarious Grandsanta, as well as the wrapping elf and even clueless Santa Claus himself.

There is no villain in this movie as such, however many of the characters have a dark edge to them, including Santa Claus himself, who doesn’t seem to be bothered by a child not receiving a Christmas present. While this might sound a little off-putting for a Christmas movie, it all leads to an even cuddlier ending.

What really makes this a great Christmas movie though is that it is essentially the story of a family. There is sibling rivalry, the grumpy grandparent, arguments over the dinner table, and the super-mom who silently holds everything together – sound familiar?

This is a movie that is packed full of cheer and you will leave the cinema with a skip in your step and a smile on your face.
