When choosing any beauty product, most of us simply scan the front looking for words like ‘anti-ageing’, ‘oil-free’ or ‘for normal and combination skin’.

However, it is important you look at the ingredients section at the back, as there are a few products that you really don’t want to be putting on your face.

So the next time you are buying make-up or moisturiser, be sure to keep an eye out for the following:

1. Benzoyl Peroxide

Usually found in products for acne-prone skin, it is a huge irritant and can be toxic.

2. DEA (Diethanolamine), MEA (Monoethanolamine) and TEA (Triethanolamine)

These can be found in foam products and can cause contact dermatitis.

3. Parabens (Methyl, Butyl, Ethyl and Propyl)

Mainly used as a preservative in deodorants, it can affect hormone imbalance and sterility.

4. Dibutyl phthalate

Can be found in nail care products and is harmful to fish and other wildlife.

5. Oxybenzone

Commonly found in spray-on sunscreens, it acts as a major hormone disrupter.
